Erik ten Hag and Anthony Martial had a heated argument during Manchester United’s loss to Newcastle on Saturday evening. The Red Devils, aiming to recover from their recent European setback, faced the high-flying Magpies at St James’ Park. Ten Hag made four changes to the starting lineup, including bringing in Marcus Rashford and Martial instead of Antony and Rasmus Hojlund.
However, Ten Hag might have regretted his choice as he got into a verbal clash with Martial during the first half. Footage showed them gesturing emphatically while having a disagreement.
Former United striker Dwight Yorke, speaking on beIN Sports, appeared to support Ten Hag as he criticized Martial during halftime, saying, “27 years old and playing for your career. I’m scratching my head why his [Martial] energy levels are so low.”
Martial’s contract is set to expire in the summer, and it’s anticipated he’ll depart Old Trafford, nine years after moving from Monaco to Manchester.
The Dutch manager substituted Martial in the 60th minute, and the striker failed to register a single shot during his time on the field. Notably, Martial hasn’t completed a full 90 minutes for the Red Devils in three seasons.
Rashford was also substituted at the same time as Martial, reverting Ten Hag to the striking partnership used in Turkey. Despite the change, it wasn’t enough, and Manchester United suffered a 1-0 defeat on the night.
