Ajax supporters were left furious when Steven Berghuis received a red card in their Europa League clash against Marseille. Berghuis made a challenge on Joaquin Correa early in the second half, cleanly winning the ball. However, Correa exaggerated the impact, falling and clutching his right foot.
Despite VAR reviewing the tackle and acknowledging Berghuis won the ball, they opted to send off the Dutch player. One possible explanation could be the scissor-like motion in Berghuis’s challenge, an action referees worldwide are striving to eliminate.
“Dreadful decision from VAR get rid of it now no one knows how to operate it,” vented one fan. Another responded incredulously, “Tf?! How is this even a red?”
Commenting on the incident, a third supporter said, “Just look at that first replay. Harsh and definitely a yellow, but how is this a red,” While another added, “How is that a red card on Berghuis? I’m confused he touches the ball then the momentum makes him take out the player!”
Berghuis himself couldn’t believe the decision and expressed his frustration in the media zone: “It’s not a red card. In fact I just watched it back, it might not even be a yellow.”
Ajax’s challenging season persisted in France as they suffered a defeat against Marseille, landing them at the bottom of their Europa League group. To enter the Europa Conference League, the Dutch side must defeat AEK Athens.
With only four victories this season, Ajax finds themselves mid-table in the Eredivisie, facing a challenging campaign.
