Cuadrado’s reunion with Juventus and Inter at Sunday’s match will likely stay etched in his memory. The warm welcome he used to receive as a hero transformed into a hostile reception, a stark contrast from just a few months ago.

Before and during his substitute appearance in the second half, the majority of the Allianz Stadium crowd directed hostility towards Cuadrado. Every touch of the ball was met with intensified boos and insults, a reaction stemming from his departure to Inter after his long stint at Juventus. While the discontent was evident, it’s worth questioning: Did Cuadrado deserve such treatment? In my view, not at all.

During his time in Turin, Cuadrado was a key figure in securing multiple Scudetto titles, contributing significantly with 26 goals across 314 appearances in eight seasons. He wasn’t merely a title-winner but a standout performer, scoring pivotal goals that shaped Juventus’ fortunes. His late winner against Torino in 2015 kickstarted a winning streak, propelling Juventus from 11th place in Serie A to eventual champions for the fifth consecutive time.

Notably, he also netted crucial goals against Inter in 2017 and 2021, including a controversial penalty that aided Juventus under Andrea Pirlo’s management. However, this penalty made him a contentious figure among Inter supporters, casting a shadow when he later joined their club.

Cuadrado’s move to Inter wasn’t a betrayal, despite Inter being Juventus’ fierce rivals. Juventus offered him a reduced contract due to his declining performance, a more than 50% pay cut from his previous €5m-a-year deal to a €2m-a-year contract with add-ons. His shift to Inter came about a month later with a formal proposal from Nerazzurri, offering a different opportunity in Serie A rather than a move to the Saudi Pro League, showing no ill will towards Juventus.

He didn’t force an exit but acknowledged the end of his tenure at Juventus, choosing to continue his career in Italy’s top-flight with a Champions League club. Cuadrado always gave his best to Juventus, displaying unwavering commitment until the last day. Despite this, his return to the Allianz Stadium didn’t yield the deserved tribute, akin to former players who departed during the Calciopoli scandal in 2006.

Cuadrado, in contrast, was not abandoning a sinking ship but navigating the end of his Juventus journey. His departure was amicable, lacking an agreement for contract extension, and his subsequent move to Inter was an opportunity aligned with his career path.

His conduct before and after the match suggests maintained relationships with former teammates, coaching staff, and behind-the-scenes personnel at Juventus. Cuadrado’s post-game interactions reflected camaraderie, deserving a different reception considering his contributions to the Bianconeri.
