Newcastle United experienced heartbreak in Paris as a controversial penalty decision robbed them of a potential historic victory against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Alan Shearer, the club legend, called the decision “a load of s***,” expressing his frustration.

Eddie Howe’s team led for a significant portion of the match, courtesy of Alexander Isak’s 24th-minute goal. The Magpies were on the verge of securing a memorable win in the Champions League group stage. However, late drama unfolded when the referee awarded PSG a contentious penalty in the eighth minute of injury time.

The penalty decision was prompted by VAR after Ousmane Dembele’s flick struck Tino Livramento’s chest and then his elbow. Replays showed the ball initially hitting Livramento’s chest, a scenario that, in the Premier League, would not typically result in a penalty. Despite this, the referee overturned his decision and awarded PSG a penalty, which Kylian Mbappe converted to level the score.

The controversial decision leaves Newcastle in a challenging position in Group F, needing a victory against AC Milan in the next match to have any chance of progressing. Legends of the game, including Shearer and Michael Owen, criticized the decision, emphasizing the lack of consistency in handball rulings.

Here is the highlight video of Paris Saint Germain vs. Newcastle, which ended with a 1-1 draw.
