Former Manchester United star Roy Keane might be poised for a remarkable comeback to the club nearly two decades after a bitter departure. Steve Bruce, another Old Trafford veteran, has hinted at the possibility of Keane taking up a coaching role with the Red Devils. This speculation arises amidst a significant shake-up at United, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe finalizes a £1.3 billion deal for a 25% stake in the club.

Keane, 52, left United in 2005 following a falling out with Sir Alex Ferguson, swiftly transitioning into management soon after retiring the following year. Bruce believes that Keane might entertain the idea of reuniting with the club after all these years.

“It wouldn’t surprise me to see Roy take up a role at Man United,” remarked the 62-year-old to The Irish Examiner. “We all know how highly he’s thought of at the club as he was there for 13 years and served as a huge captain for them. Who knows? I’m sure he’d be open to any discussion.”

Ratcliffe’s influence is already noticeable at Old Trafford, with chief executive Richie Arnold set to depart by the end of 2023. Additionally, director John Murtough might also be on the verge of leaving soon.

Since a brief stint as an assistant at Nottingham Forest in 2019, Keane hasn’t held a coaching position. Prior to that, he was an assistant at Aston Villa and the Republic of Ireland, having previously managed Sunderland and Ipswich Town.

Despite focusing on his media career and being an integral part of Sky Sports’ punditry team, Keane would likely be warmly received by many at Old Trafford.

Keane has been openly critical of certain United teams in recent times, even suggesting that some players aren’t fit for the squad. His comments, including questioning Bruno Fernandes’ captaincy, have garnered attention this season.

Erik ten Hag, the current manager, already has Keane’s former teammate Darren Fletcher on his coaching staff, along with assistant Steve McClaren, who previously worked under Sir Alex Ferguson.

As United faces Everton in their next Premier League fixture, sitting sixth in the league and with uncertain prospects in the Champions League, Keane might potentially provide the much-needed resolve for the team’s campaign.
