Former Romanian striker Marin Radu II recounted a heated incident involving the renowned manager during a 1981 UEFA Cup match where FC Argeș Pitești dominated Aberdeen.

Sir Alex Ferguson, known for his fiery tirades and infamous episodes, notably causing injury to David Beckham, displayed sheer disbelief and anger as his team trailed 0-2 at halftime.

In a fit of rage, the 81-year-old Ferguson, who managed Aberdeen from 1978 to 1986, smashed a tea urn and nearly injured himself hurling mugs against the locker room wall.

The echoes of Ferguson’s outburst resonated through the walls, audible to FC Argeș in the adjacent room, described Marin, now 67, to The Sun.

The atmosphere in Aberdeen’s locker room was tense, understandably so, given their unexpected deficit against the underdog FC Argeș.

Despite FC Argeș leading 2-0 and coming close to scoring more goals, Ferguson’s agitated response ultimately led to a draw, allowing Aberdeen to stage a comeback in the second half, resulting in a 2-2 final score.

While Aberdeen progressed to the UEFA Cup’s third round, they eventually lost to Hamburger SV from Germany.

Marin, who represented the Romanian national team seven times, revealed that Ferguson expressed interest in having him transfer to Aberdeen, an opportunity he considered a significant honor.

However, the transfer didn’t materialize, and Marin learned of Ferguson’s desire indirectly through discussions between Aberdeen officials, his club, and representatives of the Romanian Football Federation.

Ferguson’s notorious confrontational approach, including intense “hairdryer” rants involving close-up confrontations and object-kicking, was exemplified in the incident with Beckham and other instances, earning both acclaim and criticism.

Reflecting on his temperament, Ferguson acknowledged his disliked term “hairdryer,” admitting its comedic aspect in hindsight despite its initial disfavor. He emphasized the transient nature of his anger and how his players never harbored grudges, focusing instead on honesty and moving forward.
