Manchester United players point to overworking in summer as cause for slow start

More rumors of dissatisfaction are circulating among the Manchester United players, who are said to believe that their bad start to the season was caused by their overwork during the preseason.

Reportedly, Manchester United’s top players attribute their disappointing start to the season and extensive injury roster to excessive exertion.

Following a successful 2022/23 run that saw Erik ten Hag’s team secure the Carabao Cup, enter the Champions League, and make it to the FA Cup final, the expectations for this season were high. However, the reality has fallen far short, with United lagging behind significantly in the Premier League, facing challenges in their Champions League group, and already eliminated from the Carabao Cup.

The team has been plagued by a series of injuries, ruling out Jonny Evans, Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez, and Casemiro from Saturday’s match against Everton. Furthermore, doubts loom over the availability of Andre Onana, Aaron Wan-Bissake, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, and Rasmus Hojlund.

According to The Guardian’s reports, several senior players believe that their current difficulties stem from being pushed too hard during the pre-season. Allegedly, they’ve expressed concerns about feeling as exhausted at the beginning of this season as they did at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

The article suggests that these players haven’t directly communicated their worries to the manager. Ten Hag supposedly intensified the training regimen to transform United into title contenders, despite repeatedly emphasizing his squad’s dedication.

However, Ten Hag won’t be present on the sidelines for Saturday’s match at Goodison due to a one-match touchline ban, following his third booking of the season during the 1-0 win against Luton before the international break.

Further complicating matters, Hojlund and Eriksen sustained injuries during that game, exacerbating Ten Hag’s injury concerns. While Hojlund’s injury is deemed not severe, offering a slim chance of involvement against Everton, Eriksen is expected to remain sidelined until at least the middle of next month.
