While Premier League fans continue to ridicule him, Romelu Lukaku appears to be relishing this season. After leaving Chelsea on loan once more, this time joining his former Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho at Roma, following a stint with Inter Milan, Lukaku has showcased strong form in the 2023/24 season.
In Serie A, the 30-year-old has netted nine goals in 14 games, but his standout performances have been on the international stage. During Belgium’s recent EURO 2024 qualifier against Azerbaijan, he scored an impressive four goals within a 20-minute span in the first half, essentially sealing the game by the 37th minute.
Lukaku initiated Belgium’s scoring on the 17th minute, launching his four-goal onslaught against Azerbaijan, who were reduced to ten men after Eddy Pascual’s dismissal on the 24th minute. Following Pascual’s red card, Lukaku swiftly added his second and third goals before completing his quartet on the 37th minute.
Belgium triumphed 5-0, securing their spot at EURO 2024 next summer, with Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard sealing the result with a late injury-time goal.
This impressive four-goal feat elevates the former Manchester United forward to 83 international goals for Belgium across 113 appearances. It also marks his tally of eight goals in four games for his country this season.
However, despite his outstanding form, a return to Stamford Bridge seems improbable. Despite Chelsea’s substantial investment of nearly £100m to bring Lukaku back, conflicts with then-manager Thomas Tuchel led to his loan last season. Even with new management under Mauricio Pochettino, Lukaku doesn’t seem to feature in the first-team plans at Chelsea.
Belgium lead Azerbaijan 4-0 at half-time — Romelu Lukaku has all four.
He has taken his goal tally for his country from 79 to 83 in one half.
