Manchester United full-back Diogo Dalot has opted out of the Portugal squad for their final two Euro 2024 qualifiers.
This decision follows withdrawals by Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund from Denmark’s action. Dalot, aged 24, was initially part of Roberto Martinez’s 26-man squad for matches against Liechtenstein and Iceland as Portugal seeks to maintain their flawless qualifying record.
Portugal has already secured a place in the summer tournament by winning all eight Group J matches.
Despite not sustaining an injury, Dalot will miss the upcoming games due to personal reasons.
Porto’s Joao Mario has been called in as his replacement. United, in a statement, confirmed Dalot’s withdrawal, citing discussions with Martinez.
The full-back, a former AC Milan player, is anticipating the arrival of his child in the next few days. He is expected to be back for United’s match against Everton on Sunday, November 26.
This development echoes the recent exits of Hojlund and Eriksen from Denmark’s squad for matches against Slovenia and Northern Ireland.
Although both players faced issues during United’s win over Luton, they are not anticipated to be sidelined for an extended period.
Eriksen is set to be out for approximately a month due to a knee injury, while Hojlund is hopeful of returning before the end of November following a muscle strain.
Manchester United’s recent success, marked by four victories in their last five matches, positions them as the most in-form team in the Premier League.
Despite earlier scrutiny on manager Erik ten Hag, these wins include triumphs over Brentford, Sheffield United, Fulham, and Luton, with their only defeat against Manchester City.
