The clash between Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday lunchtime marked the debut of player bodycams in the Premier League. Spurs’ Brennan Johnson and Wolves defender Max Kilman were the first to don the new technology during their warm-up, providing fans with an unprecedented glimpse into the preparation of a Premier League player.

While IFAB laws prohibit the use of cameras in competitive matches, TNT Sports secured a deal with the Premier League to introduce this innovative technology, allowing bodycams to make their first appearance. This debut offered viewers a fresh perspective on footballers’ preparations.

In clips featuring Johnson, the Wales international was seen warming up with his Spurs teammates, engaging in passing drills, interacting with fellow players, and receiving instructions from coaches before heading back into the tunnel.

However, discussions among TNT pundits revealed mixed feelings about the use of this new technology. Former Manchester City defender Jolean Lescott acknowledged its appeal for fans but expressed that he wouldn’t have liked wearing it as a player.

Lescott stated, “It just gives a new generation of fans an insight into how warm-ups work. I wouldn’t have worn that it would have been a distraction for me, Not necessarily in training but I wouldn’t have worn them in games. Maybe it’s superstition – I got injured twice when I had one on – so I would have said ‘no way.’”

On the other hand, Joe Cole showed enthusiasm for the trial, even suggesting that some of the Premier League’s charismatic players could use the technology to playfully interact with viewers. Cole said, “I would be tempted to put chewing gum on it just to mess with someone!’ Cole said. ‘But it’s great insight – it’s like the eyes of the player warming up. It’s fantastic.”
