Liverpool winger Luis Diaz’s father, Luis Manuel Diaz Jimenez, has returned home after being kidnapped by ELN guerrillas in Colombia. Heartwarming footage captured the emotional reunion, showing Luis Manuel’s return after a 12-day ordeal in the group’s jungle lair. In anticipation of his return, hundreds lined the streets in Barrancas, where the abduction occurred on October 28. The community in the northern province of La Guajira eagerly awaited his arrival, celebrating with musical instruments and banners.
Luis Manuel expressed gratitude, stating, “I thank God for this second chance” and acknowledging the support from Colombia and his local community. Despite returning with an injured knee, he was seen waving as he exited a helicopter in the border area between La Guajira and Cesar, greeted by a UN rescue committee. The release followed negotiations involving the UN, the Catholic Church, and the ELN.
Luis Diaz continued training during the ordeal and played for Liverpool in their Europa League clash against Toulouse. The Colombian government had offered a reward for Diaz’s return, and the delayed release sparked outrage in Colombia. Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp dedicated a recent victory to Diaz, emphasizing solidarity, saying, “It was for our brother.”
