Mikel Arteta’s passionate criticism of VAR this week seems unlikely to result in a Premier League disciplinary action, at least for now.

Following Newcastle’s late winner by Anthony Gordon, which involved a triple-check by VAR, Arteta expressed his frustration during post-match interviews and continued during his press conference. In an unexpected twist, the club issued a statement in support of his comments.

Notably, Howard Webb, the chief refereeing officer of the PGMOL, has refrained from making any statements on the matter until the upcoming episode of “Match Officials Mic’d Up” on Sky Sports.

The Sun reports that Webb will emphasize Stuart Attwell’s decision-making and the VAR’s impact, with particular attention given to Chelsea’s tumultuous victory over nine-man Tottenham.

The decision regarding a potential punishment may follow this episode, though Arteta might escape a ban because he did not question the integrity of the officials. According to former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher, the contentious issue hinges on the subjectivity of the decision.

Gallagher stated, “The crux of the matter is that it was a subjective decision.”

“For me, it’s a push but I’ve spoken to a lot of people and while a lot agreed with me there were as many who didn’t. That’s the dilemma. The referee said it wasn’t a foul and the VAR didn’t see enough to over-rule him.”

Arsenal’s official statement declared, “Arsenal Football Club wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta’s post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening.”

“We’d also like to acknowledge the huge effort and performance from our players and travelling supporters at St James’ Park.”

“The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and supporters, all of whom deserve better. PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of officiating and focus on action which moves us all on from retrospective analysis, attempted explanations and apologies.”

“We support the ongoing efforts of Chief Refereeing Officer, Howard Webb and would welcome working together to achieve the world-class officiating standards our league demands.”
