Bert van Marwijk, former Holland manager, warned Manchester United about overpaying for winger Antony, and his words seem prophetic. Van Marwijk’s caution, shared in a column for Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf just days before the transfer, emphasized the potential overvaluation, stating, “Ajax did well to take £86 million from Manchester United. It is the absolute top price, and the club would never have received that amount for Antony in the future.” He underlined Antony’s role as a creator of opportunities rather than a prolific scorer, raising concerns about his adaptation to the Premier League’s physical demands.
Van Marwijk also suggested that Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo, a more cost-effective choice, might have been a better fit. Liverpool secured Gakpo’s services for £37 million, and he has since delivered 11 goals and four assists in 38 appearances.
Van Marwijk’s pre-transfer warning now seems well-founded as Antony’s performances and his significant transfer fee raise questions.
