Marcus Rashford, currently experiencing a dip in form, has used social media to express his displeasure with the ‘harmful rumours’ regarding a possible departure from Old Trafford.
Despite leading Manchester United in scoring last season with 30 goals, the 26-year-old has struggled this season, registering just one goal. Rashford was notably absent from Erik ten Hag’s squad during Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Fulham, with the club citing an injury as the reason for his absence.
However, many found it quite coincidental that Rashford’s absence followed a week in which he was in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. His decision to celebrate his birthday in town after United’s 3-0 defeat in the recent Manchester derby raised questions.
In response to a Man United account spreading rumours of his potential departure, the English international took to social media, formerly known as Twitter, to write, “Please STOP spreading malicious rumours,” It’s worth noting that Rashford had signed a new five-year contract in July, reportedly worth £325,000 per week.
Having gone 10 club games without finding the back of the net, Rashford had no opportunity to break that goal drought at Craven Cottage. His team required an injury-time winner from Bruno Fernandes to secure the three points.
This result was much-needed following consecutive 3-0 losses to Manchester City and Newcastle in the Premier League and Carabao Cup, respectively. Rashford did score in England’s 3-1 victory over Italy in October, but his most recent club-level goal came on September 3 in a 3-1 loss to Arsenal.
Even if United were considering selling Rashford, it would likely be a challenging task due to his substantial new contract and the remaining length of his deal. In any case, it doesn’t appear that the player is inclined to leave his childhood club anytime soon.
Ten Hag acknowledged Rashford’s night out in Manchester after the recent defeat to City and said, “I spoke with him about it,” the boss told reporters on Friday.
“It’s unacceptable, I told him, he apologised and that’s it. For the rest it’s an internal matter.”
“He’s very motivated to put things right. So, he makes a mistake, but that doesn’t say he’s not fitting in. I see him every day in training, what he’s doing, I know.”
Please STOP spreading malicious rumours.
