Lionel Messi recently shared the goal he will forever cherish among his remarkable tally of 821 career strikes. Having achieved nearly every accolade in football, including a World Cup victory, the 36-year-old superstar has etched his name in the history of the sport.

While his goal count includes crucial moments like a brace in a World Cup final and two goals in separate Champions League finals against Manchester United in 2009 and 2011, Messi admitted that none of these goals holds the top spot in his heart.

Instead, he fondly recalled a special moment during a Champions League clash between Barcelona and Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2011.

This iconic individual run in the Champions League semi-final began at the halfway line and concluded with Messi sliding in Barcelona’s second goal in their 2-0 victory, of which he scored both.

Speaking to Football France, Messi emphasized the importance of special goals and revealed, “Well, I always say that special goals are the important thing. To have scored in the Champions League final, to have scored now in the final of the World Cup… I don’t know.”

“A goal that I always remember and I don’t go much for the goal and for what the goals mean, it’s the goal against Real Madrid, which we beat 2-0 in that Champions League semi-final at the Bernabeu. I think the most significant goals are always the most important ones. But for one, I would stick with one of those.”

Out of Messi’s remarkable 821 strikes, a total of 672 were accumulated during his 778 appearances for Barcelona.

That particular goal against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final played a pivotal role in propelling Barcelona into the final, where they faced Manchester United at Wembley.

Two years earlier, Messi had also left his mark against United, scoring a gravity-defying header in the 2-0 final win in Rome, further solidifying his legacy in the Champions League.
