Jurgen Klopp holds the belief that Darwin Nunez possesses “astonishing potential” which makes him apprehensive about the incredible heights his star striker can attain.

In his debut season at Liverpool, the Uruguayan international encountered challenges adapting to a team that had an unexpectedly underwhelming campaign, falling outside the Premier League’s top four for the first time since 2016.

Doubts surrounded the £80 million record signing from Benfica, but he has astounded critics with a series of exceptional performances that highlight his extraordinary talent.

Klopp, however, envisions that Nunez’s current level is just a glimpse of what he can offer to the Merseyside club. Klopp expressed, “He’s in a very good moment, but it’s still only the start for him. I’m a bit afraid of the highs he could reach because there is so much there, it’s crazy. Now we’ve found the real starting moment and let’s work from here.”

When asked to clarify his concerns, Klopp took a moment and clarified that he was alluding to the forward’s staggering potential. Nunez’s recent late goals against Newcastle and a spectacular strike in the EFL Cup quarter-final highlight his devastating capabilities.

Klopp, Nunez’s manager, acknowledges that he is uncertain about the extent of Nunez’s potential. He remarked, “The speed, the finishing skills, the desire he has for that… when he’s fit he is really fit so he really can go and go again,” he said.

“And that’s all the package, you just don’t know where he will end up.”

“So probably I mean that, yes, his potential is frightening, absolutely. In the first year, he comes in for really big money and we all know, it shows again players need time – or maybe some people forget that again! Now he has had a good start to the season and he has scored fantastic goals, different goals, all kinds of goals, so of course he’s in a different moment.”

Klopp believes that the strong camaraderie among Liverpool’s quartet of South American talents, including Nunez, Alisson, Alexis Mac Allister, and Luis Diaz, has played a crucial role in helping the young Uruguayan striker settle into life at Anfield.

He even shared that he sent a photograph of the four of them as close friends to a prominent South American newspaper, underlining the deep bond these players from four different nations have developed.
