The Football Association (FA) is reportedly conducting an investigation into whether Sandro Tonali violated betting regulations following his summer transfer to Newcastle.

Tonali, who is 23 years old, recently received a 10-month ban from football due to his involvement in unlawful gambling activities during his time with AC Milan.

The Italian Football Federation found him guilty of breaching their rules, and FIFA extended the ban on a global scale.

In an unexpected development, the Daily Mail has reported that Tonali is now under a new investigation by the FA to determine if he also contravened their regulations. This could potentially lead to further sanctions against him.

It’s important to note that his current suspension only covers his gambling activities prior to his £55 million move to St James’ Park.

When questioned about the possibility of an FA investigation, Newcastle’s sporting director, Dan Ashworth, was cautious in his response before the news broke on November 3.

Ashworth stated,“All I can say to you is that we have fully cooperated with all of the associations and organisations concerned and the FA are, of course, fully aware of what’s going on. They are the ones who had to sanction the ban so we’re fully cooperating with everybody.”

When asked about potential additional penalties, Ashworth added, “All I can deal with is the present and the facts. I can’t look into the future and, as I’ve said, we’ve cooperated fully with all of the organisations.”

Currently, Tonali is still allowed to train with Eddie Howe’s squad, but this situation may change if the FA takes further action.

An example is Brentford striker Ivan Toney, who had to serve half of his eight-month ban before rejoining his teammates.

Sandro Tonali’s agent, Beppe Riso, has suggested that his client was struggling with a “gambling addiction” before he was banned, which raises questions about whether he placed bets in recent months as well.

Riso expressed optimism, saying, “Sandro is playing an important game against gambling addiction – he will win this one too. ‘I’d like to thank Newcastle who have always stood by Sandro. He is in shock, shaken and sad. I hope that this experience saves his life and that of many others, that it helps those who fall into the same habit as him.”
