Manchester United icon Sir Bobby Charlton tragically lost his life following an accidental tumble at a care facility, as revealed during an official inquiry.

Sir Bobby’s demise, which occurred on October 21 at the age of 86, sent shockwaves through the world of football. He was pronounced dead at Macclesfield General Hospital after an unintentional fall.

The legendary figure for both Manchester United and the England national team had been contending with dementia while residing at The Willows care home in Knutsford. According to the inquest into his passing, he lost his balance while rising from a chair and collided with a windowsill, and there was also a possibility that he struck a radiator during the fall.

Reports from the inquest noted that the care home staff did not observe any visible injuries during a comprehensive examination, but they became concerned when they noticed swelling on his back. Consequently, he was transferred to Macclesfield General Hospital, where he was placed on end-of-life care due to the potential risk of developing pneumonia.

The ultimate cause of Sir Bobby’s death was attributed to lung trauma resulting from the fall, combined with his battle against dementia. Senior coroner for Cheshire, Jacqueline Devonish, officially classified his death as accidental.

Manchester United issued a statement expressing their grief, stating, “Manchester United is in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club.”

“Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world…”

“The club’s heartfelt sympathies are with his wife Lady Norma, his daughters and grandchildren, and all who loved him.”

While his family added: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning.”

“He was surrounded by his family. His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him.”

“We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time.”
