Jacob Neestrup, the frustrated manager of Copenhagen, has called for referees to issue red cards to players who intentionally scuff the penalty spot, citing Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho as an example.

In a crucial Champions League match, Garnacho was seen deliberately stepping on the spot to disrupt Copenhagen striker Jordan Larsson’s penalty kick. Despite Garnacho’s efforts, Larsson’s shot was saved by United goalkeeper Andre Onana, securing a much-needed victory for Erik ten Hag’s team.

Neestrup, along with former Arsenal midfielder Kim Kallstrom and Copenhagen captain Viktor Claesson, criticized Garnacho’s behaviour as unsportsmanlike and childish. Neestrup suggested that referees should take action by giving red cards to players who engage in such actions to deter them from doing it in the future.

Claesson also expressed his disapproval of Garnacho’s actions, stating that it was unsportsmanlike but did not believe it affected the outcome of the penalty.

United manager Ten Hag claimed he did not witness the incident, and Kallstrom, who observed it as a pundit, condemned Garnacho’s behaviour as immature.

Presenter Olof Lundh suggested that UEFA should reprimand Garnacho for his actions. While Garnacho received praise from some Manchester United fans for his gamesmanship, the incident sparked a debate about fair play and sportsmanship.
