Phillips, who is 27 years old, has come to terms with the fact that his only opportunity for regular playing time lies outside of the Etihad Stadium. His spot in Gareth Southgate’s plans for the Euros is also in jeopardy.

During the summer, several clubs expressed interest in him, but the midfielder was determined to stay and compete for his place at City. However, he’s no closer to breaking into the first team, and he understands that making brief appearances for the rest of the season could harm his chances with the England national team.

Newcastle, West Ham, and Bayern Munich have all shown interest in him. If City can recoup a fee close to the £42 million they paid for him from Leeds two seasons ago, a transfer might be possible. They are also willing to consider loan offers if the prospective club covers his wages and commits to a purchase next summer.

Phillips still has four and a half years remaining on his £150,000-per-week contract, and City had resigned themselves to covering a substantial portion of that to facilitate his departure. However, insiders at City claim that the player is prepared to accept approximately half of that amount to reinvigorate his career.

Pep Guardiola, the manager at the Etihad, has acknowledged his failure to maximize Phillips’ potential since his arrival in 2022. During the international break, Phillips himself stated in an interview with Channel 4, “I want minutes and I want to go to Euro 2024 and we’ll see what happens.”

“As a football player, you always want to be playing, and that’s the case with me.”

“I want to be playing as much as possible and obviously I haven’t done that over the last year and a half, so that’s one thing I want to do.”
