Neymar, the Brazilian forward, to undergo surgery post ACL injury

Neymar, the forward for Brazil and Al-Hilal, will require surgery after rupturing his meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while playing for his country.

The 31-year-old player had to be carried off the field in tears during the 2-0 loss to Uruguay on Tuesday. He suffered an unfortunate landing after a challenge in the first half of the 2026 World Cup qualifying match held in Montevideo.

Expressing his emotions on Instagram, Neymar stated, “It’s a very sad time, the worst,” “I know I’m strong, but this time I’m going to need my family and friends even more.”

The duration of Neymar’s absence remains uncertain, but the typical recovery timeline for an ACL rupture or tear can extend from eight to ten months.

Ednaldo Rodrigues, the president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, emphasized the importance of Neymar’s health and return, saying, “Brazilian and world football need Neymar healthy and recovered, because football is happier when he’s on the pitch,”

Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading male goal scorer, made a move to Saudi Arabia in the summer from Paris St-Germain but has encountered a series of injuries in recent years.

In the previous World Cup in Qatar, he missed two games after sustaining an injury in Brazil’s opener against Serbia.

Additionally, he faced extended periods on the sidelines in his last two seasons with PSG due to various ankle injuries. His final season in France was cut short in February due to an ankle surgery.

Reflecting on his situation, Neymar acknowledged, “It’s not easy to go through injury and surgery, imagine going through it all again after four months of recovery.”

This isn’t the first time he’s faced adversity at a World Cup; in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, at the age of 22, he suffered a back injury from a rough tackle by Juan Zuniga during the quarter-final against Colombia.

Although Brazil won that match, Neymar was sidelined for the remainder of the tournament, and his team went on to lose 7-1 to Germany in the semi-finals.
