Gillingham’s manager, Keith Millen, received a surprising red card for inadvertently tripping an opposing player during a game.

Millen, temporarily in charge following the departure of Neil Harris, was leading Gillingham in their League Two match against Crewe.

The incident occurred when Crewe’s Tom Knowles attempted to take a throw-in near the dugouts, and Millen unexpectedly extended his foot, causing Knowles to stumble.

The referee had no alternative but to eject Millen from the touchline and could be heard admonishing the interim manager, saying, “you can’t do that, you can’t do that.”

To compound Gillingham’s woes, they suffered a 4-1 defeat, with Isaac Hutchinson scoring a hat-trick and contributing to another goal.

Acting assistant manager Mark Moss addressed the media after the game, claiming he had not witnessed the incident despite his proximity to it.

Moss remarked, “I didn’t see it at the time, I was looking down at the iPad.”

“I wouldn’t have thought he deliberately tried to trip the player, I don’t think he would do that. The referee has got his own perspective of it and it looks how it looks but I can’t see Keith doing that personally.”

Keith Millen’s future in the managerial role appears uncertain, especially with the surprising link of former Gills player Steve Bruce to the position. Responding to the speculation, Moss added, “I’m sure the club will take their time over someone. They want to get the right person in and that’s the right way to do it.”

Another potential candidate for the role is Karl Robinson, a former manager of Oxford, Charlton, and MK Dons. Gillingham, currently in seventh place in League Two, will host high-flying Notts County in their upcoming match.
