Rio Ferdinand has designated Ruud van Nistelrooy as the most prolific goal-scorer he played alongside during his tenure at Manchester United. Ferdinand, who retired in 2015, spent 12 years with the Red Devils after transferring from arch-rivals Leeds for a fee of £30 million.

The defender accumulated six Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph before his departure in 2014.

Throughout his career at United, he had the privilege of sharing the pitch with several renowned players, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Wayne Rooney.

However, when asked to identify the most lethal goal-scorer at United, Van Nistelrooy was his immediate choice.

During an interview with Manutd.com, Ferdinand didn’t hesitate to state, “Ruud for me,” he said.

“I think all the other strikers (he’s played with) would agree with that, as well.”

“Ole is up there, he was a thinking finisher. His finishes were always calm and he was great at instinctive things but I have to go with Ruud. He was clinical and the most ruthless finisher I’ve played with.”

Van Nistelrooy scored an impressive 150 goals in just 219 appearances for Manchester United over a five-year span before departing for Real Madrid in 2006.

His goal tally places him just outside the top 10 in the list of United’s all-time leading goal-scorers, with five more goals than Ronaldo, who returned to the club for a second stint in the summer of 2021.

Among the top goal-scorers are two members of the Class of ’92, Paul Scholes, who holds the 10th spot with 155 goals, and Ryan Giggs, who shares seventh place with 167 goals.

Rooney, who surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton’s record shortly before leaving United in 2017, tops the chart with 253 goals in 559 matches.

Rooney, who joined United from his childhood club, Everton, in 2004, has transitioned into a coaching role and recently took over as the manager of Birmingham City.
