Wayne Rooney Departs As D.c. United Manager Amid Tough Season

Wayne Rooney has left his position as the manager of D.C. United by mutual agreement, marking the end of a challenging season for the MLS franchise.

D.C. United’s CEO and Co-Chairman, Jason Levien, announced the decision, stating that it would pave the way for the club’s next General Manager to shape a new sporting philosophy and structure, beginning with the selection of a Head Coach.

Rooney expressed his gratitude to the club’s staff and players, saying, “I want to say on record to everyone involved in the club: staff, players—I’m grateful.”

The decision came after Rooney’s recent frustration over the lack of communication regarding his contract renewal. He returned as the club’s manager in July 2022 but faced a tough season, with D.C. United finished ninth in the Eastern Conference standings.

Rooney’s future plans remain uncertain, as he mentioned, “What lies ahead, I don’t know. I’m going back with nothing lined up.”
