During Sheffield United’s Premier League away game against Fulham, defender Chris Basham suffered a dreadful leg injury in the first half. Basham, aged 35, sustained the injury while attempting to deliver a cross, and it caused his left ankle to bend and give way. It’s important to note that no Fulham player was involved in the incident.

Following the injury, Basham received approximately 10 minutes of medical attention on the field. Eventually, he was stretchered off with the assistance of oxygen, receiving a standing ovation from both sets of fans.

An ambulance was present at the stadium to swiftly transport him to the hospital. In a positive moment, Basham gave a thumbs-up as he left the pitch.

Sheffield United shared on Twitter: “Jack Robinson replaces Chris Basham who leaves Craven Cottage on a stretcher following a lengthy stoppage in play. We send our best wishes to Bash, and will communicate updates as and when we have them.”

Fulham also expressed their concern on social media: “We’ve had a lengthy stoppage following a really nasty injury for Chris Basham, who will be stretchered off the pitch. We’re all sending you our best wishes, Chris.”

Michael Dawson, providing coverage of the game on Soccer Saturday, spoke to host Simon Thomas about the seriousness of the injury.

He explained, “We’ve had a nasty injury here, Si.”

“He just goes to cross the ball. There may have been a coming together, he may have planted his foot. I struggled to watch it the second time unfortunately. He’s down with a very, very bad injury and best wishes to Chris Basham. We’ve got a stoppage in play, paramedics are on…get well soon Chris.”

Fans reacted quickly to Basham’s injury, expressing their hopes for a speedy recovery. Some described it as one of the worst injuries they’ve witnessed. One comment read, “That Basham injury gotta be worst in prem history.” Another commented, “Not for the faint hearted but prayers with Chris Basham wish him a speedy recovery after a horrific injury.” Meanwhile, a third said, “Hope Chris Basham recovers well man. That injury looks horrible.”

Basham will now await a comprehensive diagnosis of his injury, but initial indications are not promising.

Sheffield United, who were at the bottom of the table, were in need of their first win of the season to relieve the pressure on manager Paul Heckingbottom and his players. The match remained goalless at half-time, with 14 minutes of added injury time signaled.
