The late Cathy Ferguson, wife of Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson, once nearly declined a first date during the 1960s. However, Sir Alex’s unique charm prevailed as he won her over with a box of liquorice allsorts, which he devoured during their cinema outing.

Their enduring love story, spanning 57 years of marriage and resulting in three sons and 12 grandchildren, began at a Glasgow typewriter factory where they both worked during the early ’60s.

In the 2021 documentary “Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In,” directed by their son Jason, Cathy fondly recalled their first date. She humorously described her initial impression, saying, “I just saw him walking through, and I thought he was a thug. Then I found out he was a footballer.”

Despite her initial skepticism, the box of liquorice allsorts and a local newspaper that Sir Alex bought for her marked the start of their beautiful journey. They later exchanged vows in 1966 at a Glasgow registry office.

Cathy passed away yesterday, and her loss follows her sister’s death five years ago, leaving behind a legacy of enduring love and cherished memories.
