The handling of Tuesday’s League One clash between Leyton Orient and Lincoln City has faced heavy criticism due to an attempt to resume the match while a fan was receiving CPR on the pitch’s perimeter, deemed distasteful and potentially perilous by eyewitnesses.

Tragically, 74-year-old Leyton Orient supporter Derek Reynolds passed away despite medics’ efforts at Brisbane Road. The club plans to honor him during their upcoming fixture against Reading.

Concerns arose about how the incident was managed. Fans attempting to alert referee Stephen Martin to the medical emergency were removed by stewards. A group of 20 fans subsequently sat on the pitch to ensure the game was halted.

Referees were advised not to halt games for medical emergencies last season unless absolutely necessary. The decision to attempt a restart after an eight-minute break, despite an announcement of incoming resources, has drawn criticism.

EFL sources suggest the referee was initially unaware the fan had been moved for medical care. PA announcements confused fans. The game was abandoned about 30 minutes later, with Leyton Orient leading 1-0.

The EFL will consult with both clubs to decide whether to play the final minutes or let the result stand.
