David Beckham has shared how a crucial ultimatum from his former England manager, Fabio Capello, strained his marriage with Victoria. At the time, the Beckhams had settled into life in Los Angeles, where David was playing for the MLS team LA Galaxy.

Beckham had previously faced a similar challenge to prove himself during his tenure at Real Madrid under Fabio Capello, and this challenge continued when Capello became the England manager. In Beckham’s recently released Netflix documentary, he revealed that Capello had informed him that in order to make the 2010 World Cup squad, he needed to “return to reality” and play for a top European club. Capello suggested AC Milan, to which Beckham agreed, with Victoria understanding his decision.

Victoria, recalling the moment she heard about the move to Milan, expressed her surprise and disappointment, saying, ”What do you mean you want to go to Milan?’ ‘We have just moved from one side of the world to the other, for you. What I signed up for was us being in LA as a family.”

She continued, “So I didn’t expect to turn up to LA, have everything perfect and then he goes ‘surprise, I’m going away again”

“It was going to be another time when I was left at home on my own with the kids. They were in in school.”

“I respected his career and always have done immensely, but not again. I was really upset and off he went.”

David admitted, “Selfishly, that was me saying what any of you think, this is what I need to do.”

“I wasn’t thinking about my team-mates or family. I was thinking about me.”

“If there’s an opportunity for me to play for my country in a World Cup. I will do whatever I can to make that happen.”

In the end, Beckham had two separate loan spells at AC Milan in 2009 and 2010 and made 16 appearances for England under Capello out of a possible 20. However, his efforts to secure a spot in the 2010 World Cup squad became irrelevant when he suffered an Achilles tendon injury in March of that year, causing him to miss the tournament.

Beckham also recounted in his Netflix documentary the moment Capello informed him that he would no longer play for Real Madrid after learning of LA Galaxy’s interest.
