In spite of suffering a 2-1 defeat against Wolves, Manchester City maintains its position at the top of the table with 18 points. Tottenham Hotspurs and Arsenal closely trail with 17 points each, while Liverpool sits in fourth place with 16 points, having faced a controversial decision against Tottenham.

Manchester City had been on a remarkable winning streak, winning six consecutive matches at the start of their title defence. However, their invincibility was challenged when they lost 1-0 to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup during the week, exposing some vulnerability in Pep Guardiola’s team.

Before this week, City hadn’t experienced a competitive defeat in 90 minutes since May, but they now have two consecutive losses under their belt. These defeats came courtesy of a Ruben Dias own goal and a close-range strike by Hee-Chan Hwang.

There was a brief moment of hope when Julian Alvarez curled in an outstanding free-kick to level the scores, but overall, City’s performance was lacklustre.

Notably, Erling Haaland had just 15 touches in the game, as the Wolves put up a solid defensive display. This victory was described by Gary O’Neil as the most significant in his managerial career.

Once again, Rodri was absent from the lineup as he served the second of his three-match suspension. This absence is concerning, especially considering that the influential midfielder will also be unavailable for the upcoming match against title rivals Arsenal next Sunday.
