Former Premier League star Jamie O’Hara has made an interesting choice by favoring Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero over Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, in a combined eleven.
This weekend, Spurs and Liverpool are set to face off in the Premier League, with both Jurgen Klopp and Ange Postecoglou leading their teams to strong starts this season, currently holding the second and fourth positions, respectively.
When asked to assemble his ultimate squad, O’Hara went with Romero instead of Van Dijk due to the Dutchman’s recent dip in form. O’Hara explained his choice to Grosvenor Sport, saying, “Virgil van Dijk? No! “People need to stop living in the past! I’ll go with Ibrahima Konate and Cristian Romero. Micky van de Ven deserves mention too; he’s been outstanding since his arrival, but he doesn’t make the cut. Van Dijk doesn’t make my starting lineup either.”
Van Dijk has appeared in four Premier League matches this season, but he received a red card in one of them against Newcastle. Consequently, he has only completed a full 90 minutes in matches against Chelsea, Bournemouth, and West Ham.
In O’Hara’s chosen squad, he opted for Alisson as the goalkeeper, with Destiny Udogie, Romero, Konate, and Trent Alexander-Arnold forming the defensive line. In midfield, the former Spurs player selected Yves Bissouma, James Maddison, and Liverpool’s newcomer, Dominik Szoboszlai.
O’Hara made another surprising decision in the forward positions, picking Luis Diaz. The Colombian has yet to play a full Premier League game this season, and his two goals came in the first two matches.
Alongside Diaz, O’Hara included Son Heung-min and Mohamed Salah in his attacking trio.
