The highly-anticipated clash between Ajax and Feyenoord took a chaotic turn as angry fans disrupted the match by launching flares onto the field. The fierce rivalry between the two teams was reignited on Sunday, with Feyenoord surging to a commanding 3-0 lead in the first half. However, Ajax’s home supporters, far from accepting defeat gracefully, expressed their frustration in a different way.

In a display of anger and defiance, they threw objects onto the pitch, causing a temporary halt in the game during the first half. Some fans even managed to re-enter the stadium after the match was prematurely abandoned. As the chaos spilled into the second half, the referee ultimately made the decision to call off the match after just 55 minutes of play.

Following the suspension, the Eredivisie issued a brief statement on social media, stating, “The Classic has been permanently stopped due to repeated fireworks on the field. Further details regarding the completion of this match will be provided later.”

Ajax has faced a challenging season, securing victory only once in the Eredivisie, while Feyenoord currently sits at the top of the league table after winning all five of their matches leading up to Sunday’s fixture.

The scoring was opened by Santiago Gimenez, who later secured a brace, while Brazilian standout Igor Paixao netted Feyenoord’s third goal, all amid escalating tension within the stadium.

Even after the match’s abandonment, enraged fans continued to vent their frustrations. Social media footage captured furious Ajax supporters appearing to vandalize the stadium, with smoke bombs and flares lighting up the scene. Riot police on horseback were deployed to confront fans outside the stadium.

As chaos reigned around the stadium, law enforcement resorted to tear gas to restore order. Videos showed irate Ajax fans attempting to re-enter the stadium as their frustration mounted.

Ajax’s manager, Maurice Stein, has faced heavy criticism for the team’s lackluster performance this season, with the squad currently languishing in 13th place. Technical director Sven Mislintat, formerly associated with Dortmund and Arsenal, has also come under intense scrutiny.

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) will now determine how to proceed with the remaining 35 minutes of the match. Ajax is scheduled to play another home game in three days against FC Volendam.
