Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is contemplating a surprising retirement from professional football unless he receives an enticing offer to become the first-choice goalkeeper at a prominent club.

The 32-year-old bid farewell to the Red Devils when his contract expired in July, concluding a highly successful 12-year stint at Old Trafford. During his tenure in Manchester, De Gea recorded an impressive 190 clean sheets in 545 appearances, securing numerous major trophies, including the Premier League, Carabao Cup, and FA Cup.

Since parting ways with the club, De Gea has turned down several offers and was strongly linked with a move to Saudi Arabia during the summer transfer window. Nevertheless, the Spanish international has chosen to abstain from joining any club at this time, patiently waiting for a suitable offer from the right team and manager.

Should the desired proposal fail to materialize, The Guardian reports that De Gea may retire, concluding his professional career less than two months into the new season. The former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper remains in top physical condition and is eager to join a club that competes for top honors on the grandest stage.

De Gea’s primary motivation for his next move is not financial, given that he was one of Manchester United’s highest earners, earning £375,000 per week during his final years at the club. De Gea, who will turn 33 in November, believes he still has much to offer, despite reported interest from clubs like Al-Nassr, Sevilla, and Real Betis.

In the summer, Erik ten Hag replaced De Gea with Andre Onana from Inter Milan in a deal worth around £47 million. However, United has managed just one clean sheet in their first six matches, with Onana conceding 14 goals, including four against Bayern Munich.

Onana faced criticism from both fans and pundits for a costly mistake that led to Bayern’s opening goal when he allowed Leroy Sane’s strike to slip beneath him and cross the goal line. The Cameroonian goalkeeper took the responsibility and spoke to the media after the defeat at the Allianz Arena.

In the aftermath of Onana’s error, The Sun reported that the United squad is deeply upset about the treatment of De Gea upon his departure. The seasoned goalkeeper was a beloved figure in the dressing room and won the club’s Player of the Year award on four occasions.

Reflecting on his departure from United, De Gea stated, “I just wanted to send this farewell message to all Manchester United supporters. I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love for the last 12 years.”

“We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. I took incredible pride every time I pulled on this shirt, to lead the team, to represent this institution, the biggest club in the world was an honour only bestowed upon a few lucky footballers.”

“It’s been an unforgettable and successful period since I came here. I didn’t think from leaving Madrid as a young boy we would achieve what we did together. Now, it’s the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings. Manchester will always be in my heart, Manchester has shaped me and will never leave me. We’ve seen it all.”
