Former Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed that he received an abusive message from Lionel Messi just hours before the football superstar won his seventh Ballon d’Or.
Carragher, known for his candid punditry, had expressed skepticism about Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) chances of winning the Champions League with Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe in their squad in 2021. After his comments, Messi sent Carragher a direct message, calling him a “burro,” which translates to “donkey.”
During CBS Sport’s Champions League coverage, Carragher shared the incident, explaining that he initially thought it was a fake account but later realized it was indeed Messi. He replied with a simple “Thanks for your opinion.” However, he congratulated Messi after the Ballon d’Or win, but the football star didn’t respond.
Carragher, determined to mend fences with one of the greatest players ever, stated, “I don’t want the greatest player of all time thinking I’m a donkey.”
While Carragher has faced the disapproval of both Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, he remains focused on his punditry career and the upcoming Ballon d’Or award, where Messi is the favorite to win his eighth title. The ceremony is scheduled for October 30.
