Harry Kane has addressed the reports suggesting his desire to join Manchester United during the summer transfer window. The 30-year-old striker departed Tottenham and secured a remarkable £100 million move to Bayern Munich in August, effectively putting an end to the ongoing speculation linking him with a switch to Old Trafford.

Speaking during a press conference in preparation for Bayern’s Champions League showdown with Manchester United, Kane acknowledged that there had been interest from “several clubs.” However, he emphasized that he had his heart set on Bayern when the German giants expressed their interest.

Kane stated, “To be honest over the summer there was some talks between a few clubs in the background, but then Bayern was a team I was really interested by and really excited by so there weren’t too many other discussions once they came in [for me],” he told reporters. “It was between them and Tottenham to talk and the deal got done.”

When asked about Manchester United, Kane remarked, “Obviously Manchester [United] are a great club. A really big club. But I decided to come here and I’m really happy I have.”

While Manchester United had long expressed interest in Kane, it was actually their cross-town rivals, Manchester City, who came closest to securing his signature in 2021.

Pep Guardiola was in urgent need of a replacement for the departing Sergio Aguero, who had just joined Barcelona, and Kane became his primary transfer target. Kane himself appeared eager to make the move and even submitted a transfer request in an attempt to persuade Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

However, Levy remained steadfast and declined to negotiate, partly due to Kane’s existing three-year contract at the time.

The arrival of Erling Haaland the following summer naturally reduced City’s interest in Kane, but Manchester United seemed to re-enter the picture following Cristiano Ronaldo’s unexpected departure in November 2022.

Erik ten Hag was in search of a new centre forward, but the club refused to meet Tottenham’s asking price, ultimately preventing Kane’s move from materializing.

Manchester United will face Kane on Wednesday night as they visit the Allianz Arena for their Champions League opener against Thomas Tuchel’s side. The return match at Old Trafford is scheduled for December.
