Zoey Mahoney from Drake University has left soccer enthusiasts worldwide amazed by her astonishing acrobatic throw-in goal, creating a viral sensation.

During the Bulldogs’ NCAA match against Northern Iowa, Mahoney executed an incredible somersault throw-in just five minutes into the game. The throw sailed into the penalty area, baffling the goalkeeper and finding the back of the net. This throw-in would have even made former Stoke City star Rory Delap blush, as it eluded all of Northern Iowa’s defenders before being deflected into the goal by their own keeper.

Shortly after this remarkable goal, Mahoney’s throw-in clip was shared on social media and quickly went viral. The feat was so impressive that it earned a spot on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10 plays of the day.

Fortunately, the Bulldogs, with Mahoney’s help, held on to secure a 2-1 victory over Northern Iowa.

Reflecting on the achievement, Mahoney expressed her excitement to Drake Sports Media, stating, “It’s just incredible and it’s so great for especially the Drake Women’s Soccer team, to get this kind of recognition because we’ve all just been working so hard this season and to get the recognition for all this is just awesome.”

She also shared with Drake Sports Media, “I think SportsCenter was kind of a shocker. Just because I didn’t realise it would get that far, but this has all just been so cool. It was such a team effort.”

“Like if you go back and look at the replay of it, so many of the girls were just man marking, taking players out of the equation and Leyla especially just staying on the goalkeeper and blocking her view of the ball to make sure she couldn’t get an easy save on that, that was just incredible by our whole team.”

Soccer fans worldwide were equally astounded by Mahoney’s incredible throw-in. Social media was flooded with comments, ranging from “speechless” to “unreal throw!”

Some even declared it the That’s the coolest play in a Drake soccer match. Probably ever.” Others marvelled at the distance the throw covered and questioned if it might be the first throw-in goal ever recorded.

There were, of course, some who debated the legality of the goal, but it stood due to the goalkeeper’s attempt to save the throw-in, which ultimately led to her confusion and the ball finding the net.
