Sevilla Manager Jose Luis Mendilibar has emphasized to Sergio Ramos the importance of adjusting his mindset now that he’s back at the club, following his debut in a 1-0 victory against Las Palmas.
The Nervionenses secured their first win of the season, elevating themselves from the bottom of La Liga.
A new addition to the team, Dodi Lukebakio, sealed the win in the later stages of the game. Ramos expressed his immense joy after the match, stating that he could now feel fulfilled after making his second debut at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
However, Mendilibar’s sentiments were not as jubilant as Ramos’s. He shared with Diario AS that, at 37 years old, Ramos needed to adapt to playing in a team that may not match the caliber he’s been accustomed to.
“He is the one who takes charge on the field, the one who makes decisions. But we need to reshape his approach; he aims to initiate play from the back, which isn’t our style.”
“We prefer a more direct approach, playing in the opponent’s half. Last season, we faced tough times, and there are certain aspects we’d like to avoid repeating.”
“He also needs to embrace our style of play. He has previously been part of clubs that have always dominated, but now he’s in a team where we might not have that same level of dominance. All of us need to shift our mindsets, and this includes Sergio.”
While these words might not align with Ramos’s or Sevilla’s expectations, Mendilibar appears intent on building a more grounded and humble team, especially after another summer without significant investment.
Undoubtedly, the competitive edge he instilled at the end of the previous season contributed to their success, as Sevilla appeared somewhat adrift in their first three matches without it.
