The Manchester United loanee made a second-half appearance as a substitute during their 3-2 victory against Osasuna on Sunday. Unfortunately, he faced derogatory remarks from some of the away fans.
According to The Athletic, La Liga’s official match observer reported hearing offensive chants, including shouts of “Greenwood, die.” It is expected that a legal and disciplinary process will follow in response to these incidents.
When Jogoba Arrasate, the coach of Osasuna, was asked to comment on the situation by the publication, he remarked, “The chants of ‘F*ck Osasuna’ were very bad and the chants against Greenwood were very bad too.”
“He is a player who, in the end, the justice system had its say. He is a very good player. But if we talk about chants, we should talk about all the chants, not just some.”
Greenwood played a significant role in the winning goal, as his shot was blocked and resulted in a corner. Nemanja Maksimovic then converted from the corner to secure the 3-2 victory.
This marked Greenwood’s return to competitive football since his suspension by Manchester United in January 2022. The club initiated an investigation after he was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, assault, and coercive control.
Although these charges were dropped in February 2023, Manchester United decided that Greenwood should seek a new opportunity to continue his career after the conclusion of a lengthy international investigation.
On September 1, Greenwood embarked on a season-long loan with Getafe. Jose Bordalas’s team is set to face Real Sociedad in their next La Liga match next Sunday.
