Manchester United has responded to domestic abuse allegations against winger Antony. The club had initially remained silent after Antony’s ex-girlfriend, Gabriela Cavallin, accused him of domestic violence in June. Despite her providing further details, including threats and physical harm, the club refrained from making official statements.
Antony issued two denials in response.
“I can say with confidence that accusations are false and that the evidence already produced show that I am innocent of the accusations made,” he said in a statement.
“My relationship with Ms Gabriela was tumultuous, with verbal offences from both sides, but I never practiced any physical aggression.”
“I trust that the ongoing police investigations will demonstrate the truth about my innocence.”
Antony’s inclusion in Brazil’s national team was revoked when Brazilian website UOL published Cavallin’s detailed account.
On Wednesday, Manchester United finally released a statement, acknowledging the accusations and ongoing police investigations. They emphasized taking the allegations seriously, considering the impact on abuse survivors.
Domestic abuse charities criticized the club for allowing Antony’s participation both when the allegations emerged and when the police began investigating.
The club previously faced backlash for considering the reintegration of Mason Greenwood after serious charges were dropped, ultimately deciding against it and sent Greenwood to Getafe FC on a loan.
Andrea Simon, Director of the End Violence Against Women Coalition, urged the FA and Premier League to address a culture allowing such behaviour. Tracy Blackwell, director of strategic insights and partnerships at Refuge called for a zero-tolerance policy, and Women’s Aid cautioned against Antony’s continued play.
