Former Spain women’s coach, Jorge Vilda, criticizes ‘Unjust’ termination following World Cup victory

Following Spain's World Cup victory, Jorge Vilda was fired as the women's coach due to the president of the Spanish Football Federation Luis Rubiales' on-field kissing scandal.

Jorge Vilda Former Spain Women Coach Sacked

Jorge Vilda, the coach behind Spain’s Women’s World Cup victory, has condemned his “unjust” firing.

He was abruptly dismissed just weeks after leading the team to triumph in Australia, with Pedro Rocha, acting president of the Spanish Football Federation, making the decision following the disgrace of former president Luis Rubiales.

Interestingly, Rubiales had recently offered Vilda a contract extension. Vilda stood out as the only member of the women’s national team coaching staff who didn’t resign in protest after Rubiales faced controversy for kissing midfielder Jenni Hermoso during a presentation ceremony.

Vilda even applauded Rubiales at an emergency assembly where the president refused to resign amid the scandal. Eventually, with Rubiales suspended, Vilda was let go due to the ongoing football scandal.

The Spanish Football Federation, however, did not mention player discontent when announcing Vilda’s departure, citing his professionalism instead.

Vilda has publicly expressed his view that his dismissal was “unfair.”
