The English Football Association has punished Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk for his behavior after receiving a red card during his team’s 2-1 victory against Newcastle on Sunday.
Sources have previously informed ESPN that after his ejection, Van Dijk may face a further one-game suspension.
Referee John Brooks sent the Liverpool captain a red card for a tackle on Newcastle striker Alexander Isak that he believed to have denied Isak a chance to score a goal.
While the VAR crew evaluated the situation, Van Dijk objected to the call and stayed on the field.
Van Dijk, though, reacted strongly to the judgment once VAR verified it and sustained it, and he was overheard complaining to fourth official Stuart Attwell as he made his way to the players’ tunnel at St. James’ Park.
The FA stated on Tuesday that Van Dijk was deemed to have exhibited a failure to leave the field after being dismissed or to refrain from using abusive or insulting words. The automatic one-match punishment for the red card that was given to the Netherlands international might potentially be increased by one game.
The FA issued a statement that said, “Virgil Van Dijk has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following Liverpool’s Premier League game against Newcastle United on Sunday, 27 August.”
“It is alleged that the defender behaved improperly and/or spoke abusively and/or insultingly to a referee after being dismissed in the 29th minute.
“Virgil Van Dijk has until Friday, September 1 to respond to this charge,” the statement read.
The FA will review Brooks’ account of the event before determining whether to take any further action, sources have previously told ESPN.
Due to his red card, Van Dijk will miss Liverpool’s league matchup against Aston Villa. He would have to miss the matchup with Wolves for one more game.
