Wataru Endo has disclosed that he believed Moises Caicedo had crushed his dreams of a Premier League transfer with Liverpool.

The Reds’ failure to sign either of their top holding midfield targets, Caicedo or Romeo Lavia, led to the Japan international’s move to Anfield.

In the instance of the former, they even reached an agreement with Brighton for a British record £111 million price, but they lost out when it became clear that the player preferred to transfer to Chelsea.

All of this resulted in a surprise transfer for Endo, who confesses he initially believed the chance to come to England for the summer had already passed him by.

He commented, “To be honest, I followed Liverpool’s news, that they wanted midfielders, they wanted a number six,” after making his debut in a 3-1 victory against Bournemouth.

However, I mistakenly believed Caicedo had relocated to Liverpool. So when he visited Chelsea, all I could think was, “maybe, maybe.”

“I thought there might be a chance because Henderson had moved and Fabinho had also moved to another club,” the interviewer said. “I thought maybe they needed experienced midfielders or something like that.”

Once Liverpool made the decision to sign the underappreciated Endo from Stuttgart, they moved rapidly to finalize a contract.
