After Roberto Mancini left, Italy hired former Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti as their new manager.

After leading Napoli to their first Serie A championship in 33 years, 64-year-old Spalletti left the club in the summer.

He had intended to take a year off, but has since made the decision to return to football right away.

Mancini, 58, resigned from his position as Italy’s manager on August 13.

He oversaw the national squad for five years, and in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley, they defeated England on penalties to win the tournament.

Italy, however, was unable to compete in the World Cup the previous year.

According to the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Spalletti will assume leadership on September 1.

“The national team needed a great coach, and I’m very happy that he accepted,” stated FIGC president Gabriele Gravina.

“His passion and knowledge will be essential for the difficulties Italy faces in the coming months.”

Spalletti has a long history in managing, having held positions at Roma, Inter Milan, and Zenit St. Petersburg for five years.
