With the announcement that goalie Sean Johnson will miss four to six weeks with a fractured hand on Wednesday, Toronto FC’s nightmare season took a further turn for the worse.

A hand expert will evaluate Johnson this week to decide whether surgery is necessary after the MLS team reported that Johnson suffered an injury during training on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old goalkeeper, who left New York City FC before the season and joined Toronto as a free agency, has a goals-against average of 1.16 in 19 league games this year, with six shutouts.

American international Johnson is playing in his 14th MLS season. With NYCFC, he won the MLS Cup MVP award in 2021, and he was an all-star the previous year.

With Greg Ranjitsingh serving as his backup, Tomas Romero, an international from El Salvador, is anticipated to step in for Johnson.

Johnson’s fracture comes after better injury news for TFC, with captain Michael Bradley, Italian superstar Lorenzo Insigne, and Spanish veteran Victor Vazquez all returning to training this week following layoffs due to injuries.

On Sunday, Toronto (3-11-10) will play host to CF Montreal (9-12-2).
