Lionel Messi, a striker for Inter Miami, has provided some clarification on some of his goal celebrations that have attracted more attention from fans ever since he joined Major League Soccer.

Messi has been in fantastic form since making his League Cup debut for Miami, scoring nine goals in six games.

But Messi’s goal celebrations, which he has performed three times, have been the only thing that has drawn as much attention from some as his performance.

Given that Marvel and MLS teamed earlier this year, some speculated that it was a marketing gimmick, but when Messi spoke to the media on Thursday, he offered a far more straightforward reason.

We watch Marvel superhero movies every night because my three boys are still on vacation and haven’t started school yet, he added. “They came up with the idea and requested that I perform a Marvel superhero celebration whenever I have a game and score a goal.”
