Six months after Christian Atsu’s terrible death, his partner Marie-Claire Rupio says she “hopes his name will never go away”.

Rupio discussed the former Newcastle United and Ghana midfielder who perished in the earthquakes that ravaged areas of Turkey and Syria in an exclusive conversation with BBC Radio 5 Live.

More than 50,000 people died as a result of the earthquakes, and Atsu, 31, was discovered dead under the debris of his Antakya home on February 18—nearly two weeks after the quakes.

At the time of his death, he and Rupio shared three children, who were nine, six, and three years old.

For her, it’s crucial that people remember him, especially the younger generation, and that they realize how much he was cherished by everybody.

I only hope that his name will always be remembered.

For the first time since his demise, Rubio spoke to the media and discussed the uncertainty surrounding Atsu’s safety, hearing about developments on the radio, and the effects his death has had on her and their kids.

Atsu joined Hatayspor in September, and I was astonished to learn that his family was still in Newcastle while he was in Turkey.

Rupio last spoke with him on Saturday, February 4, and he had intended to call her again on Monday since his team was facing Kasimpasa the following day.
