Despite there being no official announcement, Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani has received congratulations on his reported takeover of Manchester United.

The existing owners, the Glazer family, are expected to select a preferred bidder this week, but the Premier League giants have not yet announced who their new major owner would be. Super wealthy Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim has been battling INEOS CEO Sir Jim Ratcliffe for the better part of eight months in the race to purchase United.

Prince Jassim submitted a total of five proposals, and according to sources from Qatar on Monday, his final offer was sufficient to persuade the Glazers, who have been holding out for £6 billion ever since putting the club up for sale in November. Even though there hasn’t been any confirmation, some fans are already giddy with anticipation.

Chairman of the Armasite Group, he wrote on Twitter : “Congratulations to Shaikh Jassim Bin Hamad Bin Jassim on his acquisition of @manutd.” The tweet garnered 25,000 likes within 12 hours of posting.

In addition to ending the Glazers’ 18 years at Old Trafford, which were extremely unpopular, the chairman of Qatar Islamic Bank becoming United’s new owner would also drag the team into the heated discussion over sportswashing. Premier League teams worry that Sheikh Jassim will serve as a front for Qatar to use United as a means of advancing its objectives.
