Following Lecce’s 2-1 comeback victory over Lazio on Wednesday, defender Samuel Umtiti left the field in tears as a result of racial chants from the visiting supporters.
During the game, Lazio fans on the away end could be heard yelling racist slurs at World Cup winner Umtiti and his teammate Lameck Banda.
Hearing the chants, referee Livio Marinelli called a timeout and had an announcement made over the announcer system that the game would be permanently stopped if the chants continued. As a result, the Lecce supporters began to chant Umtiti’s name. The game continued, ending in a Lecce victory, but Umtiti was clearly upset as he left the field after the final whistle.
Umtiti wanted the match to go on, according to Lecce president Saverio Sticchi Damiani in a post-game interview.
