In Friday’s quarterfinal between Argentina and the Netherlands, Lionel Messi equaled Gabriel Batistuta’s record with his tenth World Cup goal. The legendary player from Argentina scored 10 goals in 12 games over the course of three World Cups (1994, 1998, and 2002), but he was unable to guide his country to victory.
“Dear Leo, congratulations,” Batistuta wrote on Instagram.
“I held the record for 20 years and enjoyed it. Now it’s a great honor and pleasure to share it with you, hoping with all my heart that you can break it already in the next game.”
Messi expressed his gratitude to his fellow Argentinian player on social media by sharing the photo that Batistuta had posted, saying: “Thank you very much Bati, I’m proud to be able to share it with you.”
