According to The Athletic, they attempted to entice free agent De Gea to join them at the City Ground, proposing a short-term contract through intermediaries. The aim was to showcase De Gea’s talents in hopes of securing a more significant move in the summer. However, De Gea showed no interest, leading Forest to sign Matz Sels instead.
De Gea remains without a club and faces the prospect of a year away from professional football unless an opportunity arises due to a team’s goalkeeper crisis. Ironically, he could have still been playing for Manchester United this season if the club hadn’t rescinded their contract offer and pursued Andre Onana instead.
