David De Gea declines surprise Premier League comeback, rejects Nottingham Forest offer

Forest sought a new goalkeeper in January due to doubts about their current ones, attempting to recruit De Gea on a short-term deal.

Forest appeared to lose confidence in their goalkeepers Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos, prompting their search for a new keeper in January. According to The Athletic, they attempted to entice free agent De Gea to join them at the City Ground, proposing a short-term contract through intermediaries. The aim was to showcase De Gea’s talents in hopes of securing a more significant move in the summer. However, De Gea showed no interest, leading Forest to sign Matz Sels instead.

De Gea remains without a club and faces the prospect of a year away from professional football unless an opportunity arises due to a team’s goalkeeper crisis. Ironically, he could have still been playing for Manchester United this season if the club hadn’t rescinded their contract offer and pursued Andre Onana instead. Despite speculation about a move to Saudi Arabia, nothing substantial has materialized. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid were linked with De Gea last summer, but both clubs have since addressed their goalkeeping needs.

Outside of football, De Gea is keeping busy. He established an esports team called Rebels Gaming and convinced former United teammates Bruno Fernandes and Juan Mata to become shareholders in the autumn of 2022.
