Chelsea and Napoli in Lukaku transfer talks as Maresca works to trim squad

Journalist Gianluca di Marzio has confirmed that Chelsea and Napoli are actively engaged in talks, with both clubs meeting on Thursday to discuss Romelu Lukaku’s future. Since his return to Chelsea, the Belgian striker has struggled to make a significant impact, leading Napoli’s new manager, Antonio Conte, to prioritize a reunion with Lukaku during this transfer window.

Napoli is eager to fulfill Conte’s request and has tasked their director of football, Giovanni Manna, with negotiating the deal. Manna, currently in London, is set to meet with Chelsea executives this afternoon, with Lukaku’s agent also in attendance. Although Napoli and Lukaku reportedly reached a personal agreement some time ago, the final obstacle remains striking a deal with Chelsea.

Earlier, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Napoli had submitted a formal bid for Lukaku. The discussions around Lukaku are separate from another potential transfer involving Napoli’s star forward, Victor Osimhen. Romano noted that Chelsea will only pursue Osimhen after the Lukaku deal is finalized. The Nigerian forward, who has been linked to Stamford Bridge for months, has expressed his desire to leave Napoli this summer, a request that is likely to be granted.

With Conte keen on reuniting with Lukaku, today’s negotiations could play a pivotal role in shaping both clubs’ plans for the upcoming season. During their previous stint together in Serie A, Lukaku netted 64 goals in 95 appearances, solidifying his reputation as one of Europe’s top strikers.
